A great story can bring history to life! American history is such an important subject for all children to learn but sometimes difficult to make relevant and interesting. These books offer a way for the students to delve into our historical past in another way than a history text book.
This mixed class of third and fourth graders are spunky!
They are curious, creative, and there is never a dull moment with them. The school is classified as high poverty but that doesn't stop them from learning. They love group discussions and are very opinionated. Literature circles will help them to build collaboration and understanding about American history more than any other format.
My Project
The books chosen will facilitate great historical reflection and debate. The story of John Henry may be a tall tale of the past but its moral of making the most of living is an important one. It also reflects historical story telling with visually beautiful illustrations. Squanto will be used to create interest and curiosity for early American history. It will create much interest and further investigations by the children. And finally, there is Just Juice. Many of the students will be able to connect with this 9 year old who may live in another era and another place but who may be experiencing similar problems. In addition, this story will help to build compassion and encouragement to the students.
These stories will help to make history come alive.
These books will allow students to read, share, and grow with new ideas, reflections, and debates. With your help history will find a place in these students' lives.
