This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher for eight young boys in District 75, all of which are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Each student in my classroom is an individual with their own ideas, beliefs and feelings. Each individual personality brings something special to the classroom.

My students are resilient as brick houses in a storm.

They work together to seek answers and build on each other's strengths to meet their goals. My students are fun, enthusiastic learners who make you smile on your most unfavorable days.

My Project

Play is an integral part of a happy childhood. However, for students on the spectrum, the ability to play with others can be challenging. Play time for children on the spectrum is often solitary. I am requesting these items to essentially help my students play with minimal adult interference.

The ability to appropriately play with toys and interact with other people is often taken for granted in typically developing children.

Most parents in my classroom, struggle with finding play dates for their children and in most cases only visit family members because they want to avoid social scrutiny.

These toys, which may not seem important in the classroom, will help my students develop language and communication skills, problem solving skills, and social skills. Such items as Magic Water Marbles, Mold & Play Moon Sand, Cars, Planes & Trains Bucket, and Magna-Tiles will teach my students how to share, take turns, respond to others, use their imagination and will encourage friendships.
