My students need a new trumpet, snare drum, some guitar tuners and a tuba stand as we prepare for another exciting concert/festival season

My Students

Quiet classrooms are overrated! Our music room is vibrant and full of life. From the cacophony of the beginning band to the polished sounds of our top performing groups, the band room is always alive with joyful sounds of learning!

I teach in a middle school in an urban setting.

Within our school there is a great deal of diversity, both in terms of ethnicity and economic status. Over 50% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch, but we make sure that instrumental music is accessible to all of them. In order to do so, we must provide instruments for the children, as few of them can afford to purchase one or rent privately. More than 200 students enter my room on a daily basis. Most of the them have never played a band instrument before entering our school. Some might pass by the room and call it noise. Indeed, when they first begin, their sound is raucous. By the time they reach grade 8, our students win state and regional festivals. They spread the gift of music throughout the school and local community.

My Project

In order to ensure that no student is turned away for financial reasons, I strive to provide instruments for all of the children. At the present time, many of the children are forced to share instruments or play on broken ones. The trumpet will allow one more student to have his/her own instrument to play on. Our only snare drum is made of spare parts from 3 drums. We get by with it, but the sound it terrible. The new one will help us sound better at State Festival in May. Finally the guitar tuners will make it easier for the children to tune their guitars, which we just won from another grant!

Nothing stops my students from succeeding.

They rise above having broken instruments. They deal with sharing their instruments with classmates. In spite of this, the children play as well as (if not better than) their suburban counterparts. New instruments will help them continue to excel and spread hope, pride and joy throughout our community!
