I teach at a poor inner city school. My students come from a one parent home and often have multiple family members. They are in the first grade. We had a flood last May and lost a lot of our paper materials. This is a very high need community with many at risk students. I have 4 special education inclusion students and several enrichment students mixed into my class.
My students love to make books. We got hooked on making books early because we have none at home. If we make our own books, we can build our home libraries with books that we can read. We are almost out of combs to bind the books and cardstock to make the covers. We have made autobiographies, science, reading, and personal interest book. We help other classes to bind their books as well and have used up the supply I stocked up on. I was amazed at how many different uses one machine can have and how many children would want to make books that they could keep.
With the new combs, my children and the others in our primary grades can continue to print their work in book form and increase their own home libraries. The cardstock will make the pages stronger and more durable.
If you help us by donating these materials, you will reach out and touch so many children who want to read but are limited by lack of books and no libraries to borrow a book from. You would help them reach their goals of having a library of their own. These children want to read and want to have books. Help them to read and own something of importance - a book.
