This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a special education class of kinder through fifth graders. My special education program is a blended push-in/pull-out program which means that some students come into my special education classroom and learn in small groups while other students receive their supports in the General Education classroom while working with their teacher and typically developing peers.

As of right now we are working remotely for the beginning of the school year.

Our school is just blocks away from the site of the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Our school is in the most southern part of Silicon Valley with rural and agricultural lands surrounding our school's neighborhood. Our school also has a dual-immersion, Spanish/English program which several of my students participate in. My classroom includes students of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

My Project

Each month, I ship rewards to my special education students for participating and completing their asynchronous work (its been a real challenge for them). Donorschoose and my amazing monthly donors as well as corporate donors have helped me to ship a lot of envelopes, but I am down to my last few stamps.

I never would have believed that stamps would be one of my most frequently used Classroom Basics, but here we are still learning virtually and socially distanced.

Last spring I spent hundreds of dollars mailing envelopes, postcards and packages to my students, because I live in another county from where I teach and it is difficult for me to distribute my special needs' students' items, because they are all mainstreamed in different general education classrooms. Your donations make it possible for me to continue shipping packages to my students during shelter in place as I am not even doing porch drops due to the current shelter-in-place level.
