Magnify and Bring to Life Small Details Through Doc Cam
Help me give my students a document camera for them to display their skills on problem-solving and drawing models of microscopic parts of the universe.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Majority of my students are below proficiency in science and math. Overall, my school has 72% of students from low-income families. With the present situation, where the country is economically struggling, most of my students have parents who are now out of work because of the lay offs that took place in their work places; as a result, many of them are now facing home foreclosures or staying with foster parents, and just to augment their financial needs, some of the students are working which caused them to struggle during distance learning. However, this Fall, the start of 2021-2022 school year, we will be going back to 100% face to face.
Due to Distance Learning last school year, my students did not have the chance to do any hands-on labs which I am sure that many of them wanted to engage in activities especially inquiry activities, however, this enthusiasm of students is dampen and frustrating if there are not enough equipment and materials for them to use.
My Project
The use of projected slides is a daily part of my science teaching. Pages from textbooks, lab procedures, complete solutions to complex problems are projected so students can follow along. This is a very good way of presenting lessons and concepts. But the problem starts when students need to draw models in showing patterns and quantitative relationships because most of them find difficulty typing mathematical equations or drawing electronically. So as an alternative, they take a picture of their work and post which takes time and makes students to lose track at times. By having a document camera, students will be able to avoid these difficulties and challenges and focus on increasing their understanding, thus achieve mastery.
By donating to our project, you will be able to help the students in terms of achieving mathematical and scientific literacy and skills as well, aside from becoming more engaged and increase enthusiasm in figuring out complex word problems related to STEM.
Having document camera in presenting lessons during direct instructions, or when students show and draw findings from their investigation, whether conceptual or mathematical, will be very helpful to them and also will have a better and more comprehensive understanding of the microscopic parts of phenomenon that they encounter in their daily experiences.
More than half of students from low‑income households
