Magnificent Mosaics

My students need tile cutters, glass snippers, safety gloves, safety glasses, pliers and grout tools in order to create their magnificent mosaics!

Our students are in a K-12 Alternative School setting.

As a result of a streamlined budget, art is one of the few electives that is offered. Most of the students truly enjoy being creative and are excited to try new techniques and styles. I have had several students who have expressed an interest in mosaics, but we do not have the supplies to be able to do them as a class project yet. I am excited to offer my students the opportunity this year as mosaics are a wonderful metaphor for taking the shards of our past and transfiguring them into something new, changing the narrative and the picture into one of beauty and resilience.

My Project

Imagine the power that lies in the opportunity of creating a personal mosaic. Mosaic work is nearly impossible to do without the right tools. I have already been collecting glass and tiles, but students need glass cutters, running pliers, and needle nose pliers in order to cut the materials into smaller pieces. They also desperately need safety gloves and safety glasses, along with adhesive and tools to attach wires for hanging. We need grout and grout spreaders and sponges. We need a lot to initially, but luckily, these materials are mostly all one-time initial set up purchases and will be able to be used for years to come. Through these physical tools, students will also be sharpening their emotional tools. Mosaic making creates the space for powerful conversations throughout the process, but in an informal and safe setting. I always strive for emotional safety in my classroom and these tools will help me ensure physical safety as well as students handle broken glass and tile.

Imagine the sense of pride students will feel when showing and sharing their magnificent mosaics; to be empowered to transform a previous story into something else.
