My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students come from very diverse backgrounds. Many are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. One challenge the children at my school have is not getting enough opportunities to use their hands and use their imagination. Many of the children start school lacking the motor skills needed to hold writing tools which makes it difficult to write and cut properly.
In the 21st century, children are required to think creatively and critically in all subject areas.
As technology develops and children are spending most of their free time using it, apps, electronics, and video game robots are doing for the children thus taking the hands-on exploration away.
My Project
People of all ages love to play games that are fun and motivating. Games give students the opportunity to strengthen and explore fundamental moth concepts.
Playing games encourages mathematical thinking as students find different strategies to solve problems and deepen their understanding of numbers.
Games provide students opportunities to practice skills they've learned, strengthen fine motor skills, as well as increase socialization and language and communication skills. Children need to talk about the math as they are learning it. By working with their peers in pairs and small groups children will be forced to be actively involved in their experiences.
