Magnificent Mathematical Modeling

My Students

Did you dread math class because it was difficult or boring? My students love math class because it is alive and engaging. My students love the hands-on activities and look forward to creating projects that reinforce the mathematical skills we are learning.

I teach at a small, rural, Title I school.

My students range in age from nine to fourteen. Many struggle with difficult circumstances, yet they maintain positive attitudes and are eager to learn. I have six classes of awesome fifth and sixth graders. The students enjoy our interactive learning environment and enjoy the experience of school. I try to integrate subjects as much as possible so that the students are able to make real life connections. The average per capita income for my county is $17,003. The average for our state is $25,551. The poverty rate in my county in 2010 was 16%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2010 was 13% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy, I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch.

My Project

I have requested toner for our printer, a cart with tubs to use for math manipulative storage, and decimal and fraction dice sets. These resources will allow my students to continue to learn math in a fun and engaging manner. The toner for the printer allows us to create and print math folder games. The games reinforce the skills that we are learning, and are also used for our bi-weekly Family Math Night events. By creating our games we have a few new games for each event and we can switch games out as needed to keep all of the students excited about attending Family Math Nights. The cart will allow us to organize and transport the math manipulatives needed for the math file folder games. Organization and easy access to the math supplies will allow us to accomplish more during class time and at the Family Math Night events. The decimal and fraction dice will be used in the creation of new math file folder games. All of the requested resources will reach and enhance the lives of many students.

This project is important to me because I strive to make learning math a relaxing and enjoyable experience for all of my students.

It is imperative that the students have a strong mathematical foundation so that they can be successful with whatever path they choose in life.
