My Students
Whining. I hear whining every day after lunch. "Do we have to do math again?" I find that I am beginning to whine about math too! We have a new curriculum and it is not the most inspiring math program I have worked with.
The children in my classroom are five and six year old kindergarten students that are full of energy and are very inquisitive.
They have very little experience with math learning materials. A few students come to school knowing their numbers and counting to 100. Most of my students do not even know what a number is and how to count.
Our school is located in central Florida. We are a Title 1 school because the majority of our students, about 83%, are on the free and reduced lunch program. The economy has really effected our children and their families. I found out that all but one of my students qualify for free/reduced federal food program.
My Project
The resources that I have chosen for the students are all hands-on learning materials that can be used in math centers. The students will be able to explore and master recognizing numbers, writing numbers, counting, identifying shapes, identifying colors, and spatial relationships using puzzles.
Using these items in teacher led small groups will also give the children an opportunity to explore their math skills with the guidance of an adult. Many of my students need adult supervision when using learning materials because they have no school experience. The learning materials will also allow me to expand the math curriculum and provide more interesting whole group lessons.
If the students are working with a partner or on their own, the puzzles, self-checking games, and Hot Dots cards will give the children confidence to work on math skills. This will build interest in math and the children will begin to enjoy working in math centers.
The hands-on math manipulatives will open new doors to my students by giving them a new tools to use while learning basic math skills.
I have chosen Hot Dots Jr and a selection of cards so the children that need to work with technology will be interested. The hands-on materials will give my children that need to manipulate items a way to enjoy the puzzles and counting items. Providing my students with a solid foundation in math with help them as they move up through school.
