My Students
My students are diverse learners who love to learn. Our class has a wide range of abilities. This includes students with individualized educational plans, English Language Learners, intervention students and advanced learners. The pandemic created learning challenges for many of my students, especially during the months of remote learning when students were still forming foundational knowledge in math and reading. Many of the learning gaps created in the early days of the pandemic are still present nearly two years later.
The students in my class are enthusiastic about growing in their abilities and accomplishing their goals.
They want to do their best and have high expectations for themselves and others in our classroom community. Working together they make a strong school family who cheer each other on!
My Project
The pandemic has created unique challenges in math achievement among my fourth grade students. During the early days of the pandemic when students were learning remotely for nearly a quarter of the school year, my students were still in the primary grades and developing critical understanding of basic math concepts. As a result, many students are still trying to solidify foundational understanding of smaller numbers and how our base-10 system works even as our fourth grade standards call for students to work with numbers to a million and fractional units.
These hands on learning tools will help close the gaps in math knowledge that are present in our grade level due to the pandemic, and will support my students in meeting grade level standards.
With these manipulatives, we will be able to make learning concrete at the whole class, small group, and individual level. They will allow me to address holes in students' math understanding while we continue to work on grade level math standards. Further, math manipulatives will engage the students and increase their depth of knowledge. Additionally, their retention will increase and they will be able to meet their math goals.
