Help me give my students math fraction manipulatives so they can use a hands-on approach to understanding how to operate with these challenging math units!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach to a group of 35 Fifth Grade students in a lower-income part of East San Diego County. My students are resilient and face every challenge they meet head on. They are positive role models who want to make changes in the world for the better.
This year, we are working on bringing the fun back into learning.
I want my students to explore the content in new and exciting ways. They need to be able to interact with hands-on activities and have the content embedded into real-life contexts. This will help foster relationships and establish a positive classroom atmosphere.
My Project
The new common core state standards have left students with a huge gap in their understanding of number sense and mathematical concepts. Kids can use a workbook and paper to solve problems, but when I can put mathematical concepts like fractions in their hands, I bring their learning to life! My students need engagement created by room transformations that I can do by using a picnic tablecloth and simulate the sharing of food with the fraction tiles to fully immerse them in their learning! This way school no longer becomes this "boring" place, it becomes an exciting environment where they keep wanting more!
Students deserve to have hands-on materials like math manipulatives and fraction pieces to be able to visualize and work with tasks like finding equivalent fractions while adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.
The more students can understand about math early on, the more success they will have in the future. Many technical fields require complex mathematics in the day-to-day responsibilities of jobs, so with these tools, my students will be more prepared to enter the job market having the knowledge and expertise they need to be successful!
