Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of second and third graders who attend a Title I school in Los Angeles, California. Eighty-four percent of the students qualify for free school lunch. Most come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are English language learners and a few have special needs.
My Project
A Rekenrek is a math frame designed to help students visualize addition and subtraction strategies. It consists of rods with 10 movable beads (5 red and 5 white). The students learn to focus on groups of 5 or 10 up to 100.
The use of manipulatives in math instruction deepens the understanding of concepts and increases retention and the carryover of information in new problem-solving situations.
I am requesting two types, ones that works with numbers up to 20, and one that works with numbers up to 100. These resources will be used to teach and reinforce math skills and concepts. They will be a valuable tool for all of my students, especially my visual and tactile learners.
