This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are emergent bilinguals who read, write, speak, sing, and dream in both Spanish and English. They approach life with wide-eyed, optimistic amazement, and are just as excited to engineer a bridge out of toothpicks and tape as they are to hunt down the week's phonics pattern.

In my dual language class this school year, some students will be English speakers learning Spanish, some will be Spanish-speaking children of immigrants; all have limitless potential and all are trying to learn from home.

Our school works to harness students' curiosity by working in a workshop model, with daily opportunities for students to pursue their own inquiries, build on their existing skills, and connect their learning to their home culture.

My Project

As my students return to in-person learning, they need as many opportunities for hands-on learning as possible. In order to give them those opportunities safely, we need individual sets of materials that would have been shared in a pre-Covid world.

These magnetic letters--with red vowels and blue consonants--will help students manipulate, read, and write tricky phonics patterns in English and Spanish.

Students will use the magnetic letters during reading small groups and while working individually on their weekly phonics sorts. Our classroom already has one of these sets, which provides enough letters for 6 student alphabets (including double vowels). Four more sets will allow all of the students to have their own alphabet for the year.
