Magnets in Kindergarten Attract Discovery Learning
My students need magnetic exploratory materials to teach a Magnetic Science Unit.

My Students
Our school recently changed to an all-day kindergarten program and there hasn't been time for science units in a half-day program. Now it is time to begin incorporating kindergarten science in an inviting, exploratory way! What better way than to do so with a unit on magnets?
My classroom is made up of 24 excited and eager kindergarten students in a Title 1, high-poverty area.
All children receive either free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Many students have little support at home with reading and math, let alone on fine-motor skills and techniques. When these children struggle, its my responsibility to supplement their learning in engaging, new ways.
My Project
I am requesting science kits, magnetic center materials such as wands, marbles, and horseshoes, and books about magnets to begin to incorporate science into my classroom curriculum. Math and reading can only be enhanced through this type of learning. They will use these skills to begin to ask questions of, "What if..." or "What happens when...", which encourages a child to take chances and begin problem-solving. When the questions and explorations are open-ended, a child feels encouraged to try.
I want my students to have every possibility of success!
They deserve it! Learning to LOVE and having an interest in exploring science are just a few of those components. My goal is to open their world's to exploratory learning and the endless questions of "What if..." Science can offer these students the chance of this and potentially open the door to a desire for a career in a scientific field.
