I teach a class of twenty five first grade students in a very low income community in Southeastern North Carolina. I teach the ELL (English Language Learners, non-English speaking) students. Currently, 50% of my class are ELL students.
My students have had trouble learning sounds in words. We have been doing a daily "making words" phonics lesson to help them sound out letters to create words and sentences. We are currently using paper letters and they have torn and have become worn out. I replace them, however they don't last but 2-3 weeks if we are lucky.
We greatly need plastic magnetic letters that are durable and will last for our lessons for many years to come. They will be wonderful tangible learning objects that will help all of my students learn to make words and have fun while doing so!
If you can help my students learn phonics by funding this proposal we would so greatly appreciate it! We are only allotted $200 a year for instructional supplies, and that includes buying paper, pencils, etc. After buying essentials, it leaves very little money to buy extra learning tools, such as these magnetic letters.
