Magnetic Bugs!

Kindergarteners love bugs! I am a kindergarten teacher at Walker Gamble Elementary in New Zion, SC and my class loves icky, crawly things! That's why we would like to have a magnetic bug life table in our classroom. This is how it works: a sand-filled table is home to several plastic magnetic bugs and under the table are 4 "magic" wands. The children are able to move the wands which in turn move the bugs. Yellow, green, red, black ,and brown bugs crawl in the sand as the children manipulative the magic wands. This simple activity with magnets encourages children to learn basic scientific concepts. The magnetic bug table will be set up in our science center where the children will be allowed to spend center time experimenting with the magnets on a daily basis. Because the table is so colorful and "buggy", the children will be attracted to it! Experimenting with the magnets will help them to begin using basic science skills like questioning, inquiry, etc. Kindergarten is the perfect time to begin introducing such skills because their little minds are so curious.
