My students need sets of MagnaTiles to develop spatial awareness, creativity, and mathematics skills to enhance STEAM learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a third grade class in a New York City public school in Manhattan. Our parents look to our school to provide the best 21st century skills for their children's academic success. Our school is a small Title I K-5. Small schools mean even smaller budgets and having age appropriate, tactile manipulatives to make the math curriculum accessible and interesting for all is an extra that is not always part of the budget.
Magna Tiles would be a creative and innovative way to enhance STEAM learning in the classroom.
My Project
Magna Tiles come in many shapes and have magnetic edges that allow children to build as the sides of these tiles magnetically snap together.
Magna Tiles could be the creative solution to acquiring STEAM skills so that students can be engineers in the classroom.
They will engage in planning, designing and building creations individually and as a team to connect classroom learning to the real world. All sorts of shapes, sizes, and structures result from the different configurations of the tiles, giving children spatial understanding of how design is affected by the placement of geometric shapes. Building up or across, our emerging engineers will see the relationship between mathematics and design, science and technology. We have requested three kits, each with 100 pieces so that the children will have an adequate number to develop significant work that demonstrates basic STEAM principles. The kits have translucent pieces with different colors on each side of the shapes. This affords the opportunity to include color design as part of developing an aesthetic awareness with construction. Magna Tiles are wonderful tools for creative explorers of any age.
