My Project
Have you ever heard of a magiscope? Me neither - until last week! My class recently had the opportunity to use a magiscope in our school garden. It's a cross between a microscope and a very powerful magnifying glass. It's completely portable and doesn't rely on additional light.
Children were fascinated when a sandy-covered leaf actually turned out to be a leaf full of tiny gray insects.
A zoomed-in feather came into full focus to see each individual part. A magnified ladybug's head came crawling right toward the viewer's eye.
Children in my class already enjoy looking at slides under the microscope. But in addition to the slides, they are always curious about and trying to look at things they've collected- rocks, leaves, seeds, acorns, and more. Because our microscopes rely on light to see, our found objects never show up.
Having magiscopes in our classroom means we can magnify our found items. Because magiscopes are portable, it also means we can bring them with us outside during fieldwork.
