Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Having access to great books is essential when trying to inspire young children to become passionate and life-long readers. This is something I have seen repeatedly in the my 10+ years of teaching reluctant readers. I currently serve as an AIS (Academic Intervention) Reading Teacher in the South Bronx. My students are typically reading at levels anywhere between 6 months and 2 years behind their peers.

The greatest challenge we face is having a classroom library filled with high interest books that the children will not only love reading, but that are also written at a level they read comfortably and independently.

The Magic Tree House series is perfect for young readers. Jack and Annie, the two main characters are a brother and sister duo who use their tree house to time-travel from ancient history to the moon. Further books in the series include trips to Shakespeare's England, the Wild West, Ancient Greece, the American Civil War and to the Amazon jungle. The simple language, engaging plot and short chapters are perfect for transitional readers who are beginning to read chapter books. I've read several of these books aloud to my students and they are always enthralled. Having a classroom collection that they can read independently, or take home, would truly support their reading development.

All children, but particularly struggling readers, need to feel that reading is one of the most exciting things that happens at school. In order to get them excited about reading, we need to have books that are truly engaging-- and in this case, requested by the students themselves.
