My students need this carpet to sit on when I read them stories, or for when they have free reading time and want to sit somewhere other than their chairs or the cold, hard floor.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a class of 21 fifth graders at a low socioeconomic school in Houston. Many come from non-English speaking families that have only one income. Our school is a Title I school and the majority of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch. Many do not have access outside of school to books or technology.
Despite these drawbacks, my students are anxious to learn.
They enjoy reading and learning about new places, especially places that they will probably not ever visit.
My Project
My class of 5th graders love to read! They also enjoy being read to, and when they are read to, they need somewhere to sit. Our school was built in 1926, and we have the original wood floors in our room.
While these floors are nice and in incredible shape, the students need something clean and comfortable to sit on while they read or listen to stories.
This carpet will allow them to enjoy reading time even more. Research has shown that people that read often have and increase in intelligence, and my students will be able to sit quietly and read in comfort while increasing their knowledge and and broadening their horizons.
