My Students

"Music is the poetry of the air." Richter knew that literature and music are two arts that are closely related. All it takes to turn literature into music is to add a melody. In my music classroom we try to incorporate other disciplines into music. My students need literature to make this happen!

My first-fifth grade students are absolutely full of energy!

They look forward to music, because they know they can expect 45 minutes of energetic learning. Many of my students however, spend the majority of their day at school. Quite a few of these students come to our Title I school and eat breakfast, lunch, and then dinner in the after school program. Although some of these students do not have much, they are extremely thankful for the few things they do have. They are thankful for a few drums and auxiliary instruments to make music with. They are thankful for a large music room with space to move. My wonderful, energetic, thankful students just need some encouragement and their doors begin to open to their full potential.

My Project

There are so many things we can do with literature in the music room. When we have individual assignments there are times where a few students have some free time. Books will fill this time in a productive way while students are learning about music and reading is being encouraged. In addition, the younger students learn through sound stories. All of the books we're requesting can be turned into a sound story. Students will add instruments to these stories. We will also be able to add melodies to some of these stories or allow these stories to provide inspiration for musical composition. In addition, these books are very diverse and will encourage student learning about other cultures.

Students will learn so many things from having musical literature at their fingertips.

Students will be able to compose music to already created literature, compose instrument parts to create a sound story, learn historical musical information, spend time actively engaged, and learn about other cultures. This will provide a plethora of diverse learning opportunities. With your donations, music and literature will create a unique collaboration that will change students' views on reading.
