Magical Mushroom Mystery Tour

Help me give my students mushroom growing kits to see nature in action.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Evans's classroom raised $823

My Students

My students are 16 years old and come from a large urban area. This is a very diverse group of students from a lower socioeconomic area. They have been studying microbiology and are getting ready to learn photosynthesis and ecology.

They are currently raising money for various community organizations in their city.

These are big-hearted kids who despite their own circumstances raise money to feed 200 families Christmas dinner. The money they are raising now will go to the Regional Food Bank. Great kids deserve great projects!

My Project

Students in large urban schools often suffer from nature deficits. Due to Covid-19, many of my students have lost grandparents, dealt with being sick and the fear when a loved one is hospitalized. Many of my students are carrying trauma and stress into the classroom. This project connects them to the simple act of taking care of fungi and they will be able to see the results of their efforts.

According to mental health studies, gardening increases serotonin levels and reduces anxiety.

Along with growing the mushrooms, students will be taking care of plants. ‌Gardening can improve many aspects of mental health, focus, and concentration. Focusing your attention on the immediate tasks and details of gardening can reduce negative thoughts and feelings and can make you feel better in the moment. Just spending time around plants eases stress for many people. In short, gardening improves mood.

Students are familiar with plants and animals but often have no experience with fungi or bacteria. The importance of fungi to the ecosystem and the process of decomposition is a critical component of understanding ecology. in the woods, below the surface is a network of microscopic fungal threads, known as mycelium, which are vital to ecosystems around the world. Through mycelium, mushrooms help other plants share nutrients and communicate through chemical signals. Students will be able to see the budding part of the mushroom and the mycelium with their own eyes.
