This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, engaging, kind, and curious. They absolutely love to make music of any kind! We spend time singing and moving and playing a variety of instruments whenever we have the opportunity. I also like to make sure we spend time creating and composing music.

Music moves kids!

No matter what, my kids are affected by the music they listen to and create. My school is in a small rural area in Texas, and the predominant industry is petroleum. The recent pandemic has hit us hard. Many of the parents are unemployed or underemployed and struggle to provide basic needs. We are a Title I school with about 70% of our population on free or reduced-price lunch. But still kids will stop me in the hall or catch me in the cafeteria just to let me know how much they love music class.

Many of my students are ESL, and about half of our classes are bilingual. But they are enthusiastic music makers no matter what language they speak. Their smile of joy and pride transfers across language barriers every time.

This project is for both literacy and music method books. With these books, students will have ways to focus on literacy within the music classroom as well as work on improvisation and keyboard technique. It's a win-win for the music room!
