I have read research that states that if we, as teachers, can activate the senses in our classroom, not only does it engage our students, but it also brings information from their short-term memory to their long-term memory. When students learn, they are using all of their senses. Classroom transformations do exactly this! Students in my classroom have worked on adding and subtracting decimals at "Dion's Restaurant," reviewed fractions playing football, multiplied through playing putt-putt golf, reviewed division being doctors, and calculated area and perimeter becoming construction workers. All of this without ever leaving our classroom! Over time, the materials begin to wear down during these transformations. The gowns, hairnets, tablecloth, baseball bat, fairy lights, and spinner, will all go towards the transformations that students will get to wear or use in their learning environment. I love to decorate my classroom to enhance the senses of actually being at that place (for example, ER when they are doctors, menus and tablecloths at Dions, etc...).The cardstock and colored paper will also help in these transformations by giving their workspace and task cards for these an appealing look. These items will truly help create these classroom transformations which will, in turn, enhance learning and engagement in all of our students!
