My Students
In first grade, students are beginning to make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. It is very important that I help to instill a love of reading that they can carry with them throughout their educational career. That love can start very differently for all students, but I find that most students are very engaged in our classroom read-alouds.
Many of my students start first grade believing that they can't read.
It is my job to change that. Providing an example of a fluent reader is my go-to strategy.
My Project
The Magic Tree House book series is an awesome example to students who haven't experienced great stories. So many of my students seek out the series after hearing it in the classroom and it inspires them to find more like it.
Providing an example helps students see that there is more available to them simple stories.
The Magic Tree House series takes them on an adventure previously unknown to them. I let them know that it's okay if they don't know how to read yet, they will get there and there are ways access these adventures that will inspire them for years to come.
