Have you ever been told to "come sit on the carpet" and had no idea where to sit or worse can not find a seat OR someone practically sits on your lap? This is how my students feel daily when we meet for mini-lessons and class meetings, someone is squished.
My students are high achievers from diverse backgrounds.
In my regular education classroom I have 23 second-graders who have a wide range of learning needs, for the most part the students are bright, active, hands-on learners. In my classroom we meet regularly "on the carpet" for our mini-lessons in reading, writing, and math. I have found that this creates a more intimate learning environment. It also reduces the time off task because students are not playing in their desks.
My Project
Students will use the carpet in different ways. The colorful carpet provides colored squares for up to 30 students. This will be enough spots for all the students in my classroom. I will put this carpet in front of my SmartBoard and easel where we meet for mini-lessons in all subject areas. Having the colored squares will allow my students to quickly walk to "their spot" on the rug. It will also ensure that students have their own personal space, which will be perfect since some days we use personal dry-erase boards or other materials on the rug. I use this area when I am teaching interactive lessons, projecting classwork for us to analyze, or displaying books as I read aloud.
Donations to the project will help my students have a dedicated personal space when we meet as a whole (or small) group.
The carpets will allow students to learn and work together more comfortably. While it may seem strange that a carpet can do all this, it would mean the world to us to have a bright, cheerful, and comfortable area to meet with each other while we grow and learn!
