I teach in a city school where the diverse student population is mostly made up of students from lower socio-economic classes. The students are my school are largely made up of ELL (English Language Learners) and all qualify for free or reduced lunches.
The students at my classroom face a lot of challenges in their lives.
I want to make their school experiences as positive and enriching as possible. Therefore, I try to create a classroom community that will empower my students to be lifelong learners and problem solvers.
My Project
My students love story time! They love circle time! We love our together time! All of the "together-ness" is done on our carpet, which is almost 10 years old!
We desperately need a carpet that is not dingy, dirty, and falling apart at the seams!
We need a new carpet so that the students have a comfortable spot to sit on when we work in small groups and as a whole class. The students must have other seating options in the classroom besides traditional desks and chairs.
I know that we can do our best to clean and deodorize the current carpet, but I can't do anything about the backing that is crumbling. I worry about the students in our room that have asthma or allergies. There is a continual layer of "dust" that lives under the carpet as it falls apart under us.
