My Students

My kindergarten class is filled with children that come from families of diverse cultures. They bring with them a variety of experiences and skills along with an excitement to learn. They love to be engaged in learning especially when the activity is aligned with their individual learning style. Then they proceed with confidence. In order to address the student’s style of learning, instruction needs to be flexible. The lessons should provide active involvement, physical movement, and an exposure to materials which promote self-directed learning.

Although, children at this age are filled with energy, they also enjoy finding a nook-or-cranny in the classroom for independent quiet time.

During this time, they read a book, work a puzzle, or work at a center. Comfortable, flexible seating such as pillows, soft seats, bean bag chairs, and wobble cushions, provide them with the opportunity to fully engage in the activity within a safe and comfortable environment. They are able to do this with a friend, in a small group, or individually.

Learning through doing and movement helped to overcome many discipline problems in my classroom.

My Project

This school year I would like to continue to build a learning environment which provides an atmosphere which cultivates a learning culture that addresses the learning styles of my students. Lessons will be designed to focus on age appropriate activities instead of worksheets.

After witnessing the positive impact carpet activities had on my students, both academically and socially, I would like to supplement the math curriculum by adding carpet activities.

These activities will help to reinforce math concepts such as color and shape recognition. They can be used for whole class or small group instruction.

Soft seats and other flexible seating options would be a great addition to my classroom. These comfortable seats can be used anywhere in the classroom. They would help to produce a home-like, safe atmosphere to which learning can take place.

My goal is to nurture the students that come to me at the beginning of the school year by providing them with a non-threatening, safe environment where they will be willing to engage in their learning without reservations. This year my students will be able to make significant growth during this crucial developmental window.
