This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There goes the bell, morning meeting time! But instead of having a proper place to sit, we scramble and strain for the best view of the bulletin board and daily calendar. We really need a meeting area rug, that is bright, colorful, and has those helpful grids to keep our hands and feet to ourselves.

I teach in low socioeconomic area where the majority of children come from immigrant families.

Our neighborhood, though historic, is also a located in the middle of high gang activity and unsafe play areas. School is the safe place for our students; where they are provided with a meal, can be outdoors, and of course learn! My class is a small learning community of 2nd-3rd grades how are working below grade level and have been diagnosed with a learning disability. Many of them have been bounced around either from school to school or class to class until they were diagnosed. Therefore, it is imperative that my students feel safe and supported in their academics. My goal for each of them is to build a strong foundation in learning that will foster a confidence and life long love for learning. My Project

We will be using the activity rug for our morning meeting, small group learning, read-aloud stories, and anytime we our in rotations for centers. This rug will provide a central meeting point to build community, it will help students to learn personal space and be a token of the pride in our learning environment.

This donation for my project will help my students to learn how to spatially organize themselves; how to recognize colors and grids; and the importance of taking care of items in school, for them to build a sense of community and care.
