"I'm squished!" These two words are uttered several times by my students when we all come to the rug to listen to a story or during classroom meeting times. Because our classroom rug is too small, I have to choose between not having all of my students sit together or having them be uncomfortable.
Neither of these choices works for my students.
They are curious, active, bright and kind. Our school is unique because we follow a cohort model, which means that the students stay together and move to a new teacher for each grade. This creates a special bond between the students as they move from grade to grade. They learn how to work with each other and they learn from their peers. This year I am especially lucky because I have the opportunity to teach this class again as they move from second to third grade!
My Project
I can just imagine now how excited and surprised my students would be to walk into our classroom on the first day of school and see a beautiful new carpet showing the 7 continents. We began studying geography in second grade and will be continuing to learn about the world in third grade.
Having a new carpet will benefit my students in several ways.
It will make our classroom look more inviting, but more importantly, it will ensure that all of my students can come together to learn and still be comfortable.
