My Students

Hello Donor! I am a third-fourth-fifth grade special education teacher in a public elementary school in New York, working to build on the foundation they received in lower grades. This year I am working with an English Language Learner population that needs to be motivated to read.

I am working with a 12:1 special education class in which many of the students read on a Kindergarten or first grade level.

This past year, I had students reading on a first or second grade level that worked their way up 5 or 6 reading levels in the year. I would love to replicate this success this year by utilizing magazines. I follow the curriculum I am given, but have found that it is difficult to engage students in reading when the texts are written 20 levels above where they are. With magazines, the texts are short and engaging. The students may be challenged by what they read, but mostly they are so fascinated that they don't mind the challenge.

My Project

I would love to use the magazines in the beginning of the year to read aloud to the children, for independent reading (re-read to themselves) and for guided reading. Later on in the school year, I would love to see children reading more independently and hopefully doing mini-research projects based upon the articles they have read. The topics covered during the school year include current events, technological advancements, moments in history - these magazines provide a great deal of knowledge in them.

I have used magazines in years past, and have found that they are a way to get the students habitually reading with texts that they do not find intimidating.

Your generosity could help turn these nonreaders into readers and develop skills they will utilize for the rest of their scholastic career.
