The students I teach come from an area that, over the years has been a high poverty, high crime area. It is my goal to change that stigma and help give them the best of every opportunity that I can whether it be by providing basics, or new opportunities.
The students I teach are eager to learn, and soak up new information like sponges.
All 20 of them keep me on my toes at all parts of the day. I wouldn't trade my time with them for anything! They are busy and active learners, and this project will help them be more active in a strategic way while increasing brain function at the same time.
My Project
Having Time for Kids, Scholastic News, and Super Science magazines will be the equivalent in my classroom of running to check the mailbox for mail you have received. Having bright, new, and fresh magazines weekly will inspire my students to want to read and learn more about content I am already teaching them.
Whether it is an article in Time for Kids about a child somewhere else in the world and the things they are doing, or a factual article in Scholastic News about foods we eat, students will be more excited to learn about these topics.
This project will help me build excitement and tie in a wide variety of real world topics into my classroom each week. These magazines also come with extension ideas and other ways I can use them in the classroom. It will allow for grade level reading in a form other than books, which will familiarize students with other forms of print as well.
