My Students
My classroom is not your typical classroom because it is the school library. All students in the building, kindergarten through sixth grade, come to the library each week to checkout books, do research, and learn technology skills.
My school is located in Port Orchard.
Our school population is 41% eligible for free and reduced price lunch. Many of our students do not have access to books. Reading is not always a priority at home for these students, but it is to me. Some of my students come in every single day for a new book or magazine to check out.
My Project
Reading is important and I encourage students to read anything that interests them, be that books, magazines, comics, or cereal boxes, as long as they are reading. The magazines we currently have in our library are constantly being checked out even though they are 5 to 10 years old and outdated. Actually having magazines that are current would be amazing for these students. My students need current magazine subscriptions including Boys' Life, American Girl, Sports Illustrated Kids, and Jack & Jill.
Many of these students do not have access to any other library except the school library.
If I can't provide up-to-date materials for them then they will not have the opportunity to read them. Honestly, it breaks my heart to think that they are reading magazines that are older than some of the students reading them.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
