My students need engaging reading material to help improve their reading comprehension and ability. Scholastic magazines and the accompanying online subscription will help my struggling readers to be more engaged in the text.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My scope of influence on my students is limited only to six short hours a day and five days a week. While I try my best to make every moment count, my students face many hardships.
My students are my inspiration.
My school is categorized in a "highest poverty" school district. Nearly all students qualify for the free lunch program, and many students live in a single-parent family. Despite facing these challenges, my students are hard-working and motivated to learn. They amaze me every day.
My Project
Due to budget cuts, our district was unable to purchase a subscription to the online Scholastic Magazine database for teachers this year. Having no set of classroom books, the utilization of Scholastic Magazines (Scope and Action) had been an integral part of my instruction. Finding resources for my students to read has been a challenge this year; I have old copies of magazines to use with my students, but they have already read many of the articles that I have in my possession. I need a new subscription of Scholastic Magazines to help get my students excited about reading again.
My students love reading articles from Scholastic magazines; they are engaging and include topics that kids love to read about.
With this subscription of classroom magazines, our school will receive 10 monthly copies of Scholastic Scope, 10 monthly copies of Scholastic Action, and an online subscription to these magazines for students to utilize. These magazines will be shared among the English and Language Arts teachers at our school so that they can be used along with the online subscription. Students love being able to log in on the Scholastic websites to read their new magazines each month.
Not only are these online magazines engaging, but they are also a wonderful tool for helping struggling readers. Scholastic Action offers leveled texts to help me differentiate for my students. Articles in Action are available in multiple lexile levels so that students can read material that is suitable for them. The online subscription offers a text-to-speech option so that my struggling readers can read along with the articles. Each magazine also comes with online resources such as worksheets, vocabulary, debates, and "essay kits" to help improve reading comprehension and writing abilities. These Scholastic magazines will be an important part of my classroom instruction.
