Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school motto is "Work Hard, Get Smart" and in my classroom, my students know that with hard work, they can achieve their goals. I encourage all my students to never give up no matter what obstacles get in your way.

My school is located in a low-income area and most of the students come from a low-socioeconomic family.

100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, and for many of them, these are the only healthy and warm meals they receive each day. Most of the families cannot provide their children with any school supplies, and so I must rely on either my own funds or help from donors to provide these much needed supplies. In addition, most of my students are native Spanish speakers and many face significant hardships outside of school. Our school sets high expectations for all of our students and we teach them that by focusing on their education, they can achieve their goals. Many of my students have dreams of going to college and becoming professionals, but they have to work extra hard to overcome the disadvantages they face everyday.

My Project

Since most of my students come from low-income backgrounds, their only exposure to rich text is in the classroom. I want my students to be exposed to different types of nonfiction texts, and using magazines will not only give them the opportunity to learn about a different type of text, but also provide them with a variety of topics. With the new Common Core State Standards, being able to read and comprehend nonfiction text is more important now than ever before. These subscriptions to these magazines will provide my students with another type of text that they will be able to read each week.

This project will provide my students with their own copy of two magazines that include rich and interesting articles and topics.

Many of my students do not get the chance to read nonfiction texts other than books, so this will provide them with another type of text to improve their comprehension and overall literacy skills. In addition, magazines provide my students with exposure to periodical text and a variety of information that is not found in our textbooks.
