Magazine Time

My students need subscriptions of a variety of nonfiction magazines to read in and out of the classroom. We do not have any magazines anymore in our school.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Zeglin's classroom raised $332

My Students

For the last few years our school library has not had magazines and newspapers available to students. In the past, these magazines were the only materials that students who "hated" reading found interesting. Now, they are empty and students can't browse until they find an article of interest.

My students attend a public school here in PA.

We have students from rural, suburban, and urban settings. My language arts classes are a mixed group of regular education, special education, and gifted students. Reading interest levels range from struggling readers who dislike fiction to very avid readers, who read a book a night. Like all districts, we have been affected by budget cuts and struggle to find enrichment materials for our students.

My Project

These magazines will be read at school and at home. Students who aren't interested in fiction will now learn about the latest news, science, animals, and technology. Our classroom will study propaganda and persuasion in a few months. We will examine the advertisements to discover what techniques are used. I've asked for donations but have yet to receive even one used magazine. Even after the magazines have been read and freed from their ads, we will use the remains to create "found" poems. This is where we cut out words from the magazines and arrange them into original poems.

These magazines will be a wonderful addition to our active (thanks to Donors Choose) classroom library.

I didn't think too much of the lack of magazines until a parent donated one subscription to our classroom. Students kept asking me when it was coming over and over again. I realized that this one magazine per month will have to be shared with about 90 other students! The magazine section of the library is empty. However, with your help, our classroom will be filled again with magazines.
