Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What better way to learn than from current events, in a children's magazine?
My students are 4th grade English Language Learners.
None of my students receive a daily news paper at their home. Very few of my students have a magazine subscription at home. Many of my students have never held a children's magazine. They love to read, but all too often the length of text they're asked to surmount in their second language (English) is discouraging. We have a pretty good collection of second hand comic books in our classroom library, and they are a HUGE hit with the kids.
My Project
I am requesting 21 subscriptions to SuperScience, 21 subscriptions to DynaMath, and 21 subscriptions to TIME For Kids magazine.
I think they kids would love the opportunity to read children's magazines every day. Having short, non-fiction passages directly related to the content we are learning about would be a great way to introduce new skills in Math and Science. We could have small group studies of the material and jig-saw the information from the passages together so that the students could be responsible for teaching each other the material they're learning about.
Putting the students in charge of the class and allowing me to facilitate the learning rather than directing it would be a welcomed change of pace for both me and my students.
I want them to feel independently successful. I want them to see that they can tackle the learning objectives at hand, regardless of the content and allow them to learn from magazines.
