Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach grades 6-8 at a very low income school. I have five sections of general music during the day and then 2-3 days before school, I teach choir. There is a lot of interest in music among the students, but I do not have enough supplies to meet all of their individual needs.
"What do conductors do anyways? Just swing their arms back and forth? It doesn't look hard! And what re they holding?" The students are learning about conducting, and each new quarter, these questions arise and are answered. I show them my baton and we practice using one baton and passing it around the room. ALL of the students cannot WAIT to try conducting with a real baton! They feel really important and love tracing the various patterns in the air. We have tried using pencils as a fill in for actual batons, but it just isn't the same. Our mini-conductor's would LOVE to have their own class room batons to practice and conduct the class with!
We need 30 class room conductor's batons to accompany our conducting lessons and unit. This project will serve the students by providing more time on individual batons, more independence and confidence with added practice time, and excitement to the classroom!
You will empower future Maestro's to learn effective and appropriate conducting skills! They will gain confidence by practicing alone, in small groups, and gradually in front of the class! They will have the opportunity to conduct the school choir and watch a video tape of themselves! Having student conductor's would be a great addition to our school!
