My Project

The goal of this project is to provide students in a cross-categorical special needs classroom with essential life skills through a hands-on financial literacy curriculum that mirrors real-world employment and financial experiences.

Students will begin by exploring different job opportunities within the classroom and school environment, completing interest surveys to determine their strengths and career preferences.

They will then apply for positions by filling out job applications and participating in interviews. Once hired, students will take on meaningful responsibilities such as delivering mail to teachers, making copies, assisting with bulletin boards, cleaning lounges, recycling, and creating art items for the student-run store. Each job will have clear expectations. For their work, students will earn a weekly "pretend" paycheck. They will track their earnings, budget expenses, maintain a personal finance log, and learn about financial decision-making.

Students will engage in discussions about needs versus wants and making responsible purchases. To enhance this experience, students will help set up and manage a classroom store, taking on roles such as organizing inventory, creating handmade items to sell, handling transactions with a cash register, and calculating total costs and correct change. Through these activities, students will reinforce essential math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and decimals in real-world contexts. This structured program will teach financial literacy and social skills, empowering students to develop independence and confidence.

What makes my students special is their resilience, determination, and unique perspectives on learning. Each student brings their own strengths and talents, and despite facing challenges, they approach new experiences with enthusiasm and perseverance. They thrive in hands-on, structured environments that allow them to apply their skills in meaningful ways.
