My Students
Our class is comprised of eight, amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction and daily living skills.
My Project
All students deserve to have an education in math that is at their level. I was able to get access to a wonderful product made by other teachers which teaches different lessons month by month that revolve around the same math theme and revolve around math related texts. However, our class does not have the books that go along with all of the specialized resources. Some of these books include "Five Little Speckled Frogs", "Inch by Inch" and "Bear Counts".
The mission behind Made For Me Math is to provide teachers with engaging, comprehensive math units that were designed with special learners in mind.
These monthly-themed units span various subject areas, including colors, numbers 0-5, numbers 0-10, sorting and classifying, comparing numbers to 10, patterns and positional words, shapes, basic addition, basic subtraction, and non-standard measurement.
Having access to the related texts would be such a great help for my students. They will be able to learn new math skills and work on maintaining their mastered math skills by reading these books and working with classroom manipulatives.
