My Students
Our class is comprised of eight amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
My Project
All students deserve to have education in literacy that is at their level. I was able to get access to a wonderful product made by other teachers which teaches different thematic lessons month by month. However, our class does not have the books that goes along with all of the specialized resources. Some of these books include "A Penguin Story", "Pumpkin Pumpkin" and "Gilbert the Great".
The mission behind Made For Me Literacy is to provide teachers with engaging, comprehensive reading units that were designed with special learners in mind.
These monthly-themed units span various subject areas, including basic reading, writing, math, science, and fine motor skills.
Having access to the related texts would be such a great help for my students. In addition, Made For Me Literacy comes with printable task boxes, file folder activities, cut and paste activities, easy art activities, anchor charts, and story time comprehension activities, all of which need to be printed. Our printer drum is on it's last leg and we could really use a new one to print all of these great materials.
