Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine medieval England: knights, peasants, lords, ladies, plague, crime, punishment, and intrigue. Avi's fantastic book, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, is an great introduction into this world.
I teach an amazing group of 35 mostly low-income and all gifted and talented/high achieving 5th graders.
The demographics of our classroom look like southern California. My students are Hispanic, African-American, White, and come from a variety of Asian countries. They are hungry to experiences that take them outside of the urban environment of our school and their homes.
My Project
I bought five copies of Avi's novel, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, to read with a small group in 2009. They loved it and I want to give all of kids a chance for the same experience.
Studying Crispin will also give my students an important "leg-up" when they get to middle school. In 7th grade all California students study medieval and early modern history. Given their backgrounds, most of my students will go to middle school with little prior knowledge of this time period. Studying literature that takes place during medieval European times will prepare them to interact with the history content at deeper and more complex levels.
Your contributions to this project will enable all of my current and future students to experience the world of England's medieval times.
You will help prepare them to succeed in both language arts and history for years to come. Please consider providing these much-deserving children with these valuable resources.
