My students need math enrichment materials, like Hot Dots pens, quiz cards, stamps, write-and-wipe number lines, and more. I want to bring back the excitement for learning math. I plan on incorporating these math resources into our math centers.

My Students
Do you remember when math in school was all about memorization and learning your times tables? Quite the snooze if you ask me! Well, I want my students to learn math in a meaningful and fun way. I want to incorporate centers with fun, hands on materials that will spark an enthusiasm for learning.
I have 18 Kindergarten students who love math.
However, my students need materials that will get those "wheels" moving. I need centers that will not only help enrich the standards I have to teach, but will promote independent, higher order thinkers. Many of my students need that physical connection with math. They need to dive right in and "get those five year old hands dirty." They want to learn by touching, seeing, and doing. Yes, many students can learn by listening to a teacher talk about how to add, but wouldn't you rather learn by both listening and doing? I know I would and I know so would my students.
My Project
The resources I am requesting are all hands on materials that promote problem solving, critical thinking, and independent learning. What is more successful than a student taking what you have taught them and seeing them on their own applying that to real life situations and problems. Once they get those math concepts on their own you can be proud that you have helped them to be a successful life-long learner. I have requested math center materials that will focus in many areas: sorting, patterning, addition, subtraction, graphing, measuring, weighing, counting, geometry, and problem solving. All materials are hands on and can be used in small groups and individual learning centers.
Math surrounds us everyday.
There is nothing that we can do to avoid using math in our everyday lives. Teachers need to make sure that we are teaching math as a life-long skill. I want the math concepts that I teach to lay a strong foundation for my students in the next grade. Making math meaningful, as well as fun, will guarantee that I am creating those foundations. Your donations will support me in this project and I will be able to use these materials for several years to come.
