Mad About Mallets

My students need four new sets of mallets in order to play the Orff instruments in our music classroom.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lawrence's classroom raised $246

My Students

The Orff instruments mallets in our classroom have been used by hundreds of students over the past two decades. Most of our mallets are very worn, and some of them are no longer usable. We need to replace the unusable mallets with four new ones.

My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade, ranging in age from 5-11.

Our school is situated in a suburban area of a mid-sized city. The student population of our school is about 50% free and reduced lunch. My students love music. One of their favorite things to do is play the Orff instruments. The elementary music curriculum at our school is based upon Orff-Schulwerk, a creative way of teaching music that includes singing, playing instruments, and movement. The students come to music twice weekly for 30 minutes at a time. Every student in the building has the opportunity to perform for their families and the community once a year. Music is a very important part of our school!

My Project

My students love to play the Orff instruments in our music room. However, many of the mallets used to play these special xylophones are very worn after hundreds of students using them over the past twenty years. Some of them are no longer usable. We have enough instruments that for many classes, there is no need to share instruments. However, without proper mallets my students are forced to share. We have to spend more time on repetition because students have to switch mallets, all the while perfectly good instruments are left unplayed because we don't have mallets to play them with. If we had four new mallets, we could quickly learn the music and enjoy the process and product of our learning.

This project is very important because without new mallets, our students' music education will continue to be impaired.

New mallets will allow every student to participate in music activities at the same time and will ensure the sounds that are produced are of the highest quality. New mallets will help give my students a wonderful elementary music education.
