Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As the media specialist and the technology coordinator, I teach information literacy and technology skills to over 500 K-8 students.
Our students are eager learners who are capable of engaging in learning on a whole new level if given the chance.
We are a Title I, local community school located on the southwest side of Chicago. 95% of our school population is considered low-income. Most of our students do not have access to the newest and most advanced technology at home, and many can not regularly afford internet connection. Thus, while they are at school they are eager to use technology in any way they can. They love coming to the lab and using the computers!
My Project
My students have been using various free online coding programs to learn some coding basics and spark their interest in computer programming. However, after attending a Cyber Security STEM camp this summer where I was introduced to Microbits, I believe these micro programmable computers would spark my students' interest in coding even more! Microbits are low-cost programmable computers with on-board sensors such as a compass.
With Microbits, my students can understand how easy it is to code and would be able to create meaningful projects.
My students can use established STEM curriculum to work through guided examples to discover how the Microbits work and how to interact with them. While I will continue to use other avenues for my students to use coding, microbits would be a great addition to their coding experience! I had so much fun "playing" with my microbit and I believe my students will too!
