My Students
Sitting still in class, writing notes, and regurgitating information seem to be ancient history in a NYC public high school classroom. Students need to be doing and creating. That is my challenge.
Our high school is a very large high school in Brooklyn.
It serves a very diverse population all throughout Brooklyn. Most of our students travel far every day because of the opportunities that we have at our school and their neighborhood high school is subpar. Many have to leave their homes at about 5:30AM to arrive to school on time. I want to make their time at school worthwhile by providing engaging lessons that they can partake in creating.
My Project
I envision giving student groups time during class or lunch to work on the MacBook designing their own lessons for a particular topic. In Forensic class, I can give students a topic such as specific cases and ask them to present a PowerPoint presentation on how that case relates to our topic. For Biology class, we can present how various diseases present a breakdown of homeostasis. Having the MacBook can allow me to be with them to help answer questions rather than having them off on their own in the library or computer lab.
Having students create during class will allow students to teach students.
The classroom community can be more enriching for the kids because they'll all have a responsibility and investment in learning.
