Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My main goal is to inspire my children to make a difference in the world. Our class motto is to "Play like a Champion Today," which as a former athlete, resonates heavily with me as we strive to maximize our abilities each and everyday in our educational, personal and social lives.
My school is a 2nd through 11th grade Public Charter School located in South Phoenix.
We have two campuses, one for the high school and one for grades two through eight, that are located within blocks of each other. At the middle school, we serve 99% of students on free lunch and work with a demographic upwards of 90% Latino students.
Both 4th grade classes that I teach have 24 students, full of tremendous energy and potential. My students are driven to make a life for themselves, and we have excellent parental support that conveys this same message. My students need to be able to dream, but in order for that to happen, they must be exposed to things beyond their community. I constantly spend time showing them pictures, videos and literature from different cultures, societies and populations, striving to expose them to the opportunities that they have as they grow older. Change starts with being informed!
My Project
Our class has made tremendous growth towards our goal this year, but we are missing one key element. Our classroom technology simply consists of a document camera and projector, that on a good day, last until lunch time. Our resources are lacking, and the students are ultimately the ones paying for that. As we strive to create change agents in an increasingly multimedia world, we need to expose children to the wonders of technology from a young age.
My students and I need a MacBook to integrate technology into our classroom. To create a truly engaging and powerful science and social studies content, technology is great in its ability to provide alternative funds of knowledge. Research, demos, web navigation, sources and word processing are just a few of the positives this donation will provide.
I feel I am not truly preparing my students for college and beyond unless I am giving them the access and tools to the technologies that are the future of our generation.
The idea of having an MacBook available for my use as well as my students, will allow me to alter my content in such a positive manner!
This will change my students' lives in many ways. They are being given skills that apply to a variety of jobs that will shape their futures. They will be able to complete research and projects that otherwise I am unable to assign due to no computer access. They will have access to sites such as Study Island that provide individualized and differentiated practice.
