My middle school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and is in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence, and educational inequity.
The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college.
Statistically, African Americans, boys, and students whose parents had less education were more likely to be suspended or expelled. Students who prepared more for their classes, spent more hours on homework, and aspired to higher academic achievement were less likely to be disciplined at school. Helping students engage in school may be protective against disproportionate school discipline. Only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not our students—we all aspire to go to college.
My Project
The use of a laptop is of vital importance in being able to deliver quality lessons during distance learning and in the classroom. My students have a love for hands-on learning. I have recently attended professional development webinars that taught me some tips on how to make my virtual lessons more engaging through the interactive use of technology. I can't wait to put these methods to use in my classroom virtually and in person!
This device will allow me to be able to effectively engage my students in STEM practices, create engaging and informative lessons, allow me to do demonstrations virtually with great visual and sound quality.
