Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an ESE (Special Education)/Reading teacher at a middle school in Miami. I teach and support students who have Emotional/Behavior Disorders and learning difficulties. My school is a Title I school, which means that about 99% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high-poverty neighborhood, so many of my students come from families that struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, which interfere with and hinder their learning.
My Project
There is only so much that we can do during the school day. Students are so interested in making a difference in the school and community that they have decided to stay after school to meet with me and plan activities.
We have started an after school club where students are doing community service projects and things needed for the school.
I know that students are staying after school to avoid the reality of going home so I try to have the best activities, snacks, and technology for them. These students are brilliant, energetic, and ready to help but lack some of the instruments that they need. They need a reliable, fast computer so that they can continue to do projects, complete homework assignments and complete research. Many of the students have not had the opportunity to ever touch a Mac book. Allowing students to use the mac book during class for projects, assessments and assignments makes them feel important.
